Does it take crude and rude to get a kids book published?

How is it that a children's book series about a flatulating dog is in every library, every bookstore in the U.S., but one that explains difficult subjects such as death, cancer and bullying to young kids may never be read, or reach a bookstore shelf? Why does a series about a boy and his garbage eating pet fly scream out in all it's Technicolor glory from the shelf of the "my first reader section" at my local library, but books that give young kids clear answers to their tough questions sit unpublished on the author's hard drive? Do we think young kids should be shielded from "uncomfortable" topics? Do we think children under a certain age "can't handle" the subject matter? Do we think it's better to entertain than to educate until children reach school age? Or does crudeness sell more books?

 I write a series of children's books that explain difficult subjects to preschool and young children. I created the "Mommy, What is…?" books to answer the questions my own kids asked. Back in 2007, I wrote "Mommy, What is Dead?" as a way to explain the loss of our baby to my young son. Since then, I have written "Mommy, What is Deaf?" to explain to my kids why their grandma can't hear, "Mommy, What is Cancer?" to explain why our dog died, "Mommy, What is Fat?" to explain why we should try to eat healthy foods and exercise and "Mommy, What is a Bully?" to address the epidemic of aggression kids face today, which my own son has been a victim of. I self illustrated and self printed (not published) the first three and made them available on a website (http://mommywhatis.com) because I had so many requests from friends, family and a few support groups who wanted to share them with the kids in their lives. I have done newspaper interviews about the books, blog interviews, a radio interview with a well known celebrity journalist and even won a top spot in StartUp Nation's 2011 Moms in Business competition. I have heard "What a great idea!" and "There's nothing else like this out there!" time and time again. Best of all, I have had glowing endorsements from the people who matter most of all – the kids whose faces light up with understanding after I read the "Mommy, What Is…?" books to them. Still no publishers banging down my door…

I have queried the "Mommy, What Is…?" books to dozens of agents and children's book publishers, and have received dozens of the same rejection emails saying basically the same thing – "Your books are great, but I'm (we're) not the right person to represent (publish) them." I know children's non-fiction books aren't big money makers, I don't think you'll see "The Life Cycle of a Butterfly" on the NY Times Best Seller list any time soon, but how about just seeing the value in giving kids some straight up answers? Well at least I can purchase "Everyone Poops" in four different languages. Self publish you say? I checked the statistics on self published books, and saw that most authors who do so struggle to get their books distributed and end up with boxes of their own books tucked away in the attic or collecting dust in the garage. A hundred pounds of paper in storage boxes isn't going to do much in the way of helping kids. Our world is complicated, and full of so many things that confuse, frighten, and even anger young children. I wrote the "Mommy, What is…?" books hoping to give them a measure of clarity, comfort and some uncomplicated answers to their questions. I never imagined that it wasn't a good enough reason to get published. Maybe if I write "Mommy, What is a Fart?"…

Medium Format – The Professional Choice

As you dig through a box of old wedding photos, you may come across the negatives from the event. When you open them, you will realize that they look quite different than the negatives you had from your older film camera. These negatives are much larger than the 35 mm negatives you are used to handling. This is because the wedding photographs were captured by a professional photographer on medium format film.

What Is Medium Format Film?

Photographic film comes in several sizes, but the three main ones are large format, medium format, and 35 mm. Medium format film is 56 mm in height, and the width varies depending on the type of camera used. Any film that is taller than 56 mm is considered large format. In contrast, the smaller 35 mm film is 35 mm in height. Interestingly, medium format film cartridges were first introduced for the amateur film market, but soon became the standard used by professionals, and even in the digital world of modern photography, medium format images are still quite popular among professional photographers.

Benefits of Medium Format Film

Why do professionals choose medium format film? Because the film itself is larger than a typical 35 mm negative, as much as six times larger depending on the camera used, much clearer enlargements can be produced. When 35 mm film is enlarged, it often has grain and blur due to great difference in size between the negative and the resulting image. Since the medium format negative is larger, there is less difference in size between the two, and the resulting image has a smoother gradation and does not show as much grain as a similar enlargement of a smaller negative. Even though medium format film carries a distinct advantage over 35 mm film, it does have a disadvantage in today's market. The disadvantage is that medium format film is not a digital medium. The old negatives you have in a shoebox in your closet are difficult to share with friends because they are not digital. Professional photographers who use medium format film need a way to digitize the images in order to display them in a digital portfolio or on a website.

Medium format film can be scanned using specialized scanners designed to carefully handle these negatives and create a positive scanned image. The process begins with a careful cleaning of the negative to remove any stray dust or lint. Unmounted negatives are then placed into a glass film adapter that holds the image steady during scanning. Negatives that are mounted are loaded into a mounted film carrier. These negatives are scanned using high-resolution scanning equipment designed specifically for negatives. A typical flatbed scanner cannot accomplish this task and create a quality digital image as a result. Dust and scratch removal technology is essential to creating a clean digital image from a medium format negative.

Because medium format film is larger than 35 mm film, the scanned digital image will be more clear and crisp than the image that would be created by scanning a 35 mm negative. When larger film is combined with a high-resolution scanning equipped to handle medium format negatives, the resulting images are professional and perfect for creating a digital portfolio or simply preserving memories for a lifetime.

Budgeting For A Baby

You find yourself walking resolutely across the department store, an enormous stuffed bear tucked under your arm. You set it on the counter and straighten the polka-dotted ribbon that is tied around its neck. It will cost more than your favorite pair of running shoes, but you know you must have it. That is, the baby must have it. Your eyes widen a bit when the clerk announces the total, but you quickly hand over your credit card. The bear will look just perfect when it's propped up in the corner of the nursery. (Its yellow polka dot tie is almost an exact match to the new crib bumpers.) You predict that once the baby's room is done, the spending is certain to slow down.

"I mean," you think to yourself, "how much could such a little person cost?"

You might be surprised to know that the U.S. Department of Agriculture can answer that question for you. Since 1969, it has published a report called "The Annual Expenditures on Children by Families." The report estimates the cost of raising a child from birth to age 17. Year after year, this report reveals that a little person can cost a whole lot of money indeed.

The most recent "Annual Expenditures on Children" report was published in April 2007. It states that the total cost of raising a child from birth to 17 years old is between $200,000 and $300,000 - depending on a family's income and where they live.

Big numbers like those are overwhelming, but new parents can look at a smaller picture and reflect on the annual expenses of raising a child in order to plan wisely. Again, the USDA report comes in handy. It states that families with pre-tax incomes of less than $44,500 spend about $7,580 annually on their 0-2 year old children. Households earning $44,500-74,900 spend $10,600 on children this age and those who make more than $74,900 spend $15,760 a year on these young children. Across income groups, expenditures increase as children grow older.

After weeks of broken sleep, your first instinct might be to say you're too tired to think about how your new baby might affect your finances. You just want him to sleep through the night; you can't begin to think about how you might pay for his violin lessons someday. But, given numbers like those in the USDA report, all new parents should stop, make a strong cup of coffee, and give their financial future a long, steady look.

A NEW BUDGET FOR A NEW FAMILY CONFIGURATION

If you haven't used a budget to manage your family's finances in the past, this is a good time to start. New parents are often surprised at how the arrival of their baby affects spending in all areas of their lives.

Expenses that you might consider "fixed" increase with each new family member. Utility bills rise as soon as baby comes home. Couples use more water and often maintain warmer homes in the winter and cooler temperatures in the summer to keep their young children comfortable. Parents spend more money on gas than before having children - either because of a larger, safer car - or because of new trips to daycare and other child-related destinations. Health care costs rise with more frequent co-pays for medication and doctor visits. Not all insurance covers required immunizations either. Even entertainment spending grows when, on top of the cost of a night out, you must pay a babysitter.

Not only do existing expenses grow but significant, new ones are added. Two new and large everyday baby expenses are, of course, diapers and formula.

New parents can expect to spend up to $2500 on diapers between birth and the time a child is potty-trained. Although older babies require far fewer diaper changes than a newborn, most toddlers go through a long, transitional time before being fully potty-trained. During this time they wear expensive, "pull on," training diapers.

Using cloth diapers with a diaper service costs approximately the same amount as disposable diapers. Parents who choose this option do so, primarily, to lessen the environmental impact of their baby. The cheapest solution to diapering is to wash your own cloth diapers. This can save more than $1,000 over time, but, clearly, it isn't a commitment many parents are willing to make.

Aside from the costs of diapers and wipes, another cause of "sticker shock" for new parents is the cost of formula and baby food. A conservative estimate of the cost of formula for a baby's first year is $1,500. An obvious solid financial choice, then, is to breastfeed your baby. As well as saving money on formula, the health benefits of breastfeeding are numerous. (For more on the rewards of breastfeeding, see the La Leche League website at www.llli.org.) Even when factoring in the costs of nursing clothing and renting or buying a breast pump, breastfeeding provides significant savings to parents.

If breastfeeding isn't an option, parents can save money on formula by:

* visiting the manufacturers' websites (most offer money-saving coupons),
* buying powdered formula in bulk from warehouse stores like Costco and Sam's Club, and
* asking pediatricians to recommend a generic or store-brand formula.

When your baby graduates to baby food, consider making your own. Buy a few jars of baby food and get to know your child's favorites. Note the consistency of the food and begin to experiment at home. Cooking fruits and vegetables, mashing them, and then freezing small portions in ice cube trays is an easy and cheap way to nourish your baby. Your pediatrician will recommend which foods - and in what order - to introduce to your baby at different ages.

Financial planning experts agree that making and keeping a budget is an important way for anyone - especially those suddenly faced with providing for a baby - to keep their spending under control. There are many books and websites that offer budgeting information and tools. THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE BUYING EQUIPMENT AND TOYS FOR BABY

Your budget will likely include a category for "miscellaneous" expenses. The excitement of preparing for baby makes some parents throw their usual financial caution to the wind and overspend in this category. You may be swept away by that adorable stuffed animal or convinced that you need every possible safety device to protect your child.

In order to keep from breaking the bank, new parents should pause before buying toys or gadgets for their babies. Although their catalog descriptions claim that you can't live without them, items like wipes warmers, video baby monitors, fancy diaper pails, and electronic play mats are not in fact "essentials." Relieving Pregnancy Aches & Pains

It's not pregnancy that causes aches and pains, it's posture. Posture while you're sleeping, standing, walking and sitting can cause problems with your lower back, hips, shoulders, headaches and cramping. So before you reach for the bottle of painkillers, or spending a lot of money on seeing an osteopath, use the guidelines below and see if anything changes.

Once you reach 22 weeks of your pregnancy, it is strongly advisable to lie on your side (normally your left side) while sleeping. This is because you have a main vein running up the right side of your spine, and with the extra weight of your belly pressing against it when you're on your back, you and your baby will find you get short of breath and will be restricting the blood flow to your baby. If you find yourself on your back during the night, don't worry. Your body has woken you up so you can change position and be more comfortable.

Many doctors, midwives and physiotherapists recommend placing a pillow between your knees while you sleep on your side to help with hip and back aches. Unfortunately this is totally pointless. The first problem is that you'll be placing too much pressure on the inside of your leg with the weight of your top leg. Given that your blood is thicker and prone to clotting (very normal and healthy; any clots are usually dissolved naturally), you don't want to be putting extra weight onto your legs. You're likely to experience pins and needles and cramping by doing this.

The second problem with using a pillow between your legs is that the pillow is rarely stable enough and thick enough to keep your hip joints at the right angle. This will mean that you're back will be twisting (causing more mid and lower backache and also pressing on your belly) and your hip will be over stretching with the angle of your leg pulling down. It's really not comfortable to lie like this, and your sleep will be compromised.

For a Joyful night's sleep, I recommend getting either a sturdy bolster (that won't roll) or a firm pillow from the sofa that is at least as thick as the span of your hand; your thigh needs to be at a right angle to your hip joint and your foot supported (preventing cramps). This will allow you to have a straight spine while sleeping and also give your belly enough room to be comfortable, and thus give baby enough room to move. Your lower back ache will be eased and you'll be comfortable enough to sleep well.

If you turn over in the night, don't worry about the leg pillows... put your leg over your partner! (If he/she doesn't mind!!) They're usually just the right height!

You will also need to place a small pillow under your belly as you sleep on your side. There are some ligaments from your uterus that are attached to the base of your spine, so any pulling on those may cause lower back ache. By placing a small pillow, just big enough to stop the feeling of dragging (so not very thick) you'll find your lower back is much more comfortable, and you're baby will have more room to move.

To help with any shoulder tension, I suggest you place a pillow parallel to the pillow under your head. Allow your shoulder to drop down between the two pillows to as you don't squash it while you're asleep. Having the pillow horizontally will mean that if you roll over you'll already have the pillow in place for your other side. I also think it's a great idea to hug on to a pillow over your chest (like you would a teddy bear). This stops your exposed shoulder from over stretching as it drops down and will also protect your breasts if they're feeling tender.

Prevention is better than a cure, so even if you don't have any aches, please do lie with these pillows so as to have a comfortable pregnancy. Going into labour with a sore back to start with isn't a very good way to enjoy your child's birth to the full.

Whenever I mention posture to a client, they immediate stiffen their back and pull their shoulders back! Here are some great tips to encourage good posture, the easy way...

When you walk, stand or sit, try and remember to have your feet pointing forwards. By turning your toes out, or your ankles in, will result in hip ache as the bones and joints are rotated. When your feet are pointing forwards and the weight of your body is evenly distributed you should feel a slight pull outwards on your thighs. If you feel the weight on your feet is uneven (on the front, back or sides), rock backwards and forwards or side to side until you feel that the weight is equal.

The weight of your body, and correct posture, should be held on your bones and not your muscles. Muscles are designed for movement and if they're expected to take your body weight for prolonged periods they will start to ache. Place a finger on the ball of your hips (one on each side), and purposely push your bottom out. You should feel the ball of your hip roll down and back. Many women stand like this and think they have a big bum and belly; standing like this will feel like your growing uterus is dragging down. Tuck your bum under so as you feel the ball of your hips roll up and forwards. It's only your bottom that needs to move, not your legs and knees. You should now feel the weight being held in your hips and feel a relief from your belly and back.

If your shoulders are prone to rolling forwards you're likely to cause yourself lower and mid back aches from the muscles pulling, and also neck ache and headaches. The way you will always be able to tell if your shoulders are rolling forwards is by placing your hands by your sides. If your hands are infront of the seam of your trousers/skirt then your shoulders are rotating forwards. All you need to do to correct your posture, is to move your hands, palms flat against your leg, behind the seam of your trousers. It's really difficult to roll your shoulders forwards when you're hands are in this position. When walking remember to swing your hands behind the seam of your trousers, rather than in front of you. Keep practising this and you'll find any shoulder and neck tension will disolve very quickly.

Standing and walking with the weight in your hips and your shoulders back will now make you look like a gorgeous pregnant woman rather than a gorgeous over weight lady. Follow these easy steps and you'll have more space to breathe, your mood will lift, your energy will increase and your baby will have more space to wiggle!
