Beatles Tribute Bands - How They Are Keeping History Alive

Although the  group disbanded in 1970, their legacy still lives on today.  No matter what your age, everyone is familiar with the groundbreaking sound that these singers/musicians introduced.  Fortunately, they have had such an impact that, even though they are no longer around, we can still hear their music today.  In movies, television, and on the radio, we can still hear bits of classics like, "A Hard Day's Night" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand".  Their spirit and sounds are also kept alive through the awesome tribute bands paying homage to them, making the Beatles still one of the most popular acts in the world today. 
Although these tribute bands differ in many ways, the share the common denominator of being appreciated and enjoyed by any baby boomer loving the classic rock of the Beatles.  Ironically enough, these spin-off bands began forming even while the original band was still in existence.  More than simply a cover group, these bands were, and still are, deeply devoted and dedicated to the music of their heroes.    
While the original band is no longer around, you can still get your Beatles fix by attending one of the many concerts performed by the multitude tribute bands they have spawned.  There is even a music festival, called Abbey Road on the River, designed to feature these bands in all their duplicity of their idols.  Some of these groups strive to replicate every last detail of the group, from their speech, to their clothes, to their hair, to their mannerisms while others remain in character throughout entire shows and are truly awesome to experience.  As imitation is the sincerest form of strategy, some bands reenact the Beatles shtick to the last detail.  Too factual here, need more poetry
The Beatles spirit,  the most beloved rock band of all time, have given rise, to a myriad of tribute bands devoted to them internationally.  Hailing from Liverpool, England in the 1960's, these legendary icons made up of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, took the world by storm.  With their unique sound and their mop-top hairdos, they were an act unlike any that anyone had ever seen before.  Their impact on popular culture was unparalleled and they still have an indelible mark on the culture of today.

Five Baby Nursery Furniture Essentials

After all the ups and downs of birthing, feeding, changing, dressing and generally pampering four precious babies, I think I can safely say that I know what works, and what doesn't, in terms of organizing your baby nursery on a budget.

There are many baby nursery furniture options available on the market today. Most are not necessary, however. In my opinion, you only really need five items of furniture for your baby nursery. (If you do not have a closet in your baby nursery, you may need to add an armoire to the list.)

Somewhere to sleep - A baby crib.

You have many choices here, from a straight forward standard baby crib to a luxurious round or fantasy carriage crib. If you have a few dollars to spare, convertible baby cribs are great value for money.

No matter which baby crib you decide upon, remember to take baby crib safety into account. Current baby crib safety guidelines are far more stringent than in the past. For this reason, the use of a second hand baby crib is not recommended.

Somewhere to change, dress and mess with baby - A baby changing table.

Some people will tell you to go without this item and to change your baby in the crib. If you have chosen a baby crib with a drop down side rail this is entirely possible to do. However, you'll probably end up with backache.

If you do decide to purchase a baby changing table, you have a choice between the open front changing table with storage baskets, which are very pretty, or a dresser-changing table combo.

The dresser is a much more practical option, both in terms of crawling babies and nursery storage. Try to find one with four drawers or more, or three drawers plus a side cupboard. (Watch the height of the table though. Waist height is best for comfortable changing.)

All baby changing tables should have a safety rail and safety straps attached. Use these EVERY time you change your baby.

Somewhere for all the used baby outfits - A baby hamper.

Essential for keeping track of all those little baby clothes. Keeping them separate is a real time-saver if you do not wash the rest of your family laundry in the mild detergent recommended for babies.

If floor space is a concern, a laundry bag hung on the back of the nursery door works too.

Somewhere to keep feeding supplies and a lamp - A nightstand or table.

The nursery lamp and nightlight stand here, close to the feeding chair. A nightstand is better, because it has drawers for baby's feeding items.

The night time hours are so much easier if you are comfortable and have everything you need, organized and close to hand.

Somewhere to sit and feed baby - A nursery rocking chair or glider.

An absolute must for all those early morning nursing sessions. Money cannot buy the hours and hours of bonding time you will have here with your little one.

Make sure you try the rocker or glider before you buy it. You will regret a quick buy when you are sitting in the baby nursery at three in the morning and the chair is giving you a sore back.

The Bubble is Back: Micro Cars Make a Comeback

With a more environmentally conscious world than ever before, manufacturers are continually looking for new ways to give people less car for their money. But in the world of motoring, less can often mean more; less weight means more fuel efficiency, smaller engine sizes mean lower fuel consumption, and lower fuel consumption combined with more fuel efficiency means less money needs to be spent on fuel.

However, thinking small isn't a new thing; it was the lack of materials and fuel after WW2 that first prompted the development of the Bubble Car. The crippling shortages meant that car manufacturers had to think small, and it was talented engineers - many of whom had worked in the former military aircraft industry - that decided to downsize the family motor. Known as Bubble Cars due to their dome-like rounded shape, these vehicles became a common sight on the roads of Europe during the fifties and sixties.

Because these cars cost less to make than larger vehicles the barrier to entry was smaller, and a number of small manufacturers enjoyed a brief period of success before being squeezed out of the market by the big boys of the time such as German engineering company Messerschmitt.

But the Bubble Car was more than just an automobile. It symbolised a new dawn for Europe, and signalled a renewed energy and prosperity for its people, striving to recover from the rubble of a bombed-out civilisation, who needed cars but who couldn't rely on the savings or car credit options we enjoy today, to buy one.

However, the Bubble Car boom was to be short lived; rising standards of living and the rebuilding of Europe's war-torn nations meant that production of raw materials began to rise again, and within a decade, consumers wanted to drive bigger cars that reflected the growing wealth of the people.

And so a period of growth began where cars got bigger, bolder and brasher, leading right up to the 90s with the current, so-called "Soccer Mums" driving massive petrol guzzling Sports Utility Vehicles (nicknamed Chelsea Tractors) in inner city areas just to do the shopping and drop off the kids. This excessive consumption of fuel has led to a public backlash, with pressure groups campaigning for the banning of such vehicles in city centres, citing that they produce unnecessarily high carbon emissions, aggravate already severe traffic conditions, heighten parking problems and are purely fashion accessories rather than necessary modes of transport.

Now, however, the car industry is looking to downsize once more, and we could soon see a revolution in micro-cars. Of course, there have always been several small cars on the market - the ever popular Mini being one example that is still going strong, but it seems that more and more manufacturers are developing smaller cars, such as the Aptera, the Tata Nano, and of course the Smart Car which has now been in production for over a decade.

The micro-car craze is yet to really take off in North America, where oversized engines have always been the order of the day, but in Europe, drivers are welcoming the smaller vehicles and appreciate that where cars are concerned, small really is beautiful.

Newborn Kitten Care

There are several different reasons that may make it necessary for us to have to take care of a newborn kitten. First, the mother cat may be sick or even has died. She could have even had more kittens then she could take care of. If the kitten is sick, sometimes the mother cat will not take care of it. And the worst is that the owner of the mother dumped the kittens out, while this is sad, it does happen quite often . 

One of the most important things is to make sure the kitten is dry and warm. A kitten will die very quickly in a short amount of time if his temperature is dropped and he goes into metabolic shock. Fixing a dry, warm bed is important. Using old towels and a cardboard box will work. Just holding the kitten to your body will help to warm him also. Be careful if you need to us a heating pad or heat lamp. Be sure the kitten can crawl away from the heat if he gets too warm, which is also dangerous. After he seems warmed, give him a quick look over. Check the eyes, ears and general overall condition. Are the eyes alert or matted up and closed? Is the ears waxed or full of fleas? Is the kitten vocal and moving around or quite and still? 

Making the decision of whether to keep the kitten or to call the animal shelter is up to you, but please do not just walk away. The kitten will die without help. If he seems to check out okay and you decide to keep him, you may want to give him some children's pedialyte will be good to rehydrate the kitten. A mother's milk substitute or what is called a milk re-placer can be purchased at a local pet store along with supplies like the eye dropper, bottle or a syringe that will help to feed the kitten. Follow the manufactures instructions and the results will be fine. 

One thing to know is a newborn kitten will not be able to voluntarily eliminate his feces or urine until around the age of three weeks. You will have to stimulate the perineal area as the mother cat would stimulate the urogenital reflex by licking after every feeding.. A good way is to use a warm cloth or cotton ball and gently rub. Also the kitten will need to be bathed with the warm cloth to help keep him clean. After about three weeks you will be able to start weaning off the bottle. A good way is to start by mixing the milk re-placers with can food to the texture of a milkshake to help the kitten learn to eat out of a dish and gradually increase to solid foods. 

Keep in mind for the first three weeks a newborn kitten is almost like have a new born baby in the house. They also will need to be feed around the clock. But at the end of this time you will have a new addition to your family that will have his own very unique personality.

How to Decorate a Baby Nursery Stress Free

If you are pregnant, then you are undoubtedly anxious and a bit overwhelmed with all the decisions you have to make.  There are many things that need to be done in preparation for the birth of a baby and one of them is the nursery.  Sometimes designing it turns into a fierce competition among expecting moms.  You do not have to please or outdo the neighbors; after all it's your baby, your nursery, your taste.

A nursery is important because it's your baby's safe cocoon as well as his playground.  Also, through colors, textures, and shapes you introduce the outside world to your baby for the very first time.

Before you create the nursery you have to decide which one of your rooms the nursery will reside in.  The most common spot is a room adjacent or close to your bedroom, and for a good reason. It will be easier to hear your baby and you will not have to run from one end of the house to the other to attend to his needs.  Once this is taken care of you have to awake the designer in you and choose the color palette.

Nurseries come in all designs and sizes and can feature many different colors and themes.  Many parents decorate their nursery using gender specific colors and themes but gender neutral themes are picking up in popularity too. Obviously, the gender of your baby, if you know it beforehand, will be a determining factor.  In the past the difference between boy nurseryand girl nurserywas easily defined - sports and 'manly' professions in blues and browns for boys; angels and florals in pinks and yellows for girls. Not so anymore. The introduction of modern colors and contemporary designs make the distinction between boy and girl nursery very subjective, excluding the obvious.

If you have decided to wait for the big surprise in finding the gender of your baby, then unisex design is for you. That's also an excellent idea if you plan on using the nursery for your baby's future brothers and sisters.

Light colors are preferred and more professionally recommended over dark colors. Use hues that are similar to the sun so that there is a sunny simulation even when it's cloudy and grey outside. Make sure to include various tones and shades of blue in the nursery.  Blue has been proven to be a soothing and calming color.  Remember that blue is no longer a color for boys only. In fact, many shades of blue and turquoise are now being used for girls.

Next, consider the fabrics that you will use in the nursery.  Ensure that you pair cheerful, colorful fabrics when you select the bedding and furnishings.  Also, don't be shy about mixing different fabrics.  If you're considering using a theme, popular ones include animals, sea creatures, teddy bears, sports, jungle, circus, tropical and others all in bright and cheerful colors.  Many of these themes are developed in blues and yellows to help the natural flow of colors in your baby's nursery.  Don't be overly concerned with using strictly blue or pink colors when designing a boy or a girl nursery.  The gender of your baby is not determined by the nursery colors.

Your goal is to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and enjoyable for both you and your baby. Consider colors which you like, forget about the neighbors or the trend of the day. You will be the one spending a lot of hours in that room and you don't want to add any stress to your already hectic life. Release your imagination and creativity and most importantly have fun decorating your baby's nursery

Latest Projects Abroad News From the Taricaya Conservation Research Centre in Peru

February saw the arrival of our 500th volunteer at Taricaya and that made the month special to those of us who have been involved in the project from its infancy. As the Taricaya family continues to expand, I am still constantly amazed by the dedication and commitment of volunteers at the centre as they create their own part of Taricaya’s history. This month was no different to any other with more than enough work to keep us all busy and plenty more left to be done!

The seasonal rains finally arrived with vengeance this month and the depressions around the reserve began to fill with water. This makes some areas of the reserve inaccessible for those unwilling to wade through a few swamps but fortunately volunteers and staff relish such adventure and “swamp” clothes were separated for the times when a soaking became inevitable. One such occasion was the successful release of our ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) together with a radio collar. Whilst this particular cat is no threat to people, its presence around the lodge needed to be avoided for the safety of the other residents in the animal release program. A young paca or baby spider monkey would make a tasty snack for a hungry ocelot and so we hade to take her further into the reserve. With the collar duly attached volunteers took it in turns to carry her through the swamps and out to EMTO colpa where we released the margay (Leopardus wiedii) in 2005. This site is deep in our reserve but not close to any of the borders so a safe place for the ocelot to establish its territory. It will not compete with the margay as the ocelot is larger, primarily terrestrial and more active by day whereas the margay is nocturnal and prefers an arboreal lifestyle, as demonstrated by our sighting of it on the canopy walkway last year. With the ocelot successfully released we now have the task of monitoring its progress in the wild by means of radio-tracking. This will be exciting for us as we have never actively tracked released animals before and it will be great to get an insight into its natural history as it establishes itself back in the wild.

There was also an accidental release in February as one of our blue and yellow macaws (Ara ararauna) made a bid for freedom one morning as the flock was being fed. The escapee flew through the door as it was being opened and has joined forces with the scarlet macaw (Ara macao) released last month as they both circle the lodge regularly. The blue and yellow macaw is much friendlier than its scarlet cousin and comes down to the hammocks requesting food. It would be easy to recapture the bird but I think it is better flying around the camp and strengthening its flight muscles because there is another blue and yellow macaw approaching its release date. The blue and yellow macaws will almost certainly join up when the other is finally strong enough and I hope to release the other scarlet macaw at the same time so that both species form pairs and start their new lives in the reserve.

The rains have also meant a significant increase in the activity of the reptiles and amphibians around the reserve. The frogs and toads use the temporary water for breeding sites and their mating calls and displays inevitably attract predators such as snakes. The species list continues to grow as we encounter more wonderfully bizarre individuals. Notable captures/sightings in February include a new species of turtle (Chelonia), a rainbow boa, tree frogs (Hyla sp.) and a fantastic dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus trigonatus). The dwarf caiman capture came during a caiman hunt out on the river one night after dinner. One of the talks I give at the centre is on caiman and after the lecture I take volunteers out on the river to catch a caiman and illustrate the points I have previously outlined before releasing it back into the river. It is customary to catch either a black or a spectacled caiman but this time I was amazed to haul in a 1.1 metre dwarf caiman. Not only are these small crocodilians rare but the one I caught was close in length to the largest individual ever recorded. Dwarf caiman are rarely recorded over 1.2m so ours was a relative giant for the species. Their diminutive size means that they cannot compete with the larger caiman species and so dwarf caiman are reclusive and often nomadic and, as a defence against attack, their skins are much tougher with armoured scutes (plates) all over the body. This capture was unbelievable and fuels speculation about what other amazing creatures are out in our reserve awaiting discovery.

The topic of the fish project had become somewhat of a joke at Taricaya as Fondepes, the Peruvian organisation responsible for breeding the young fish, kept postponing the delivery date for the fish we had ordered. Week after week Fernando and I would chase them up with no success and it was looking as though the project would have to be put on hold until next year as water levels started to drop in the creek. It got to the stage where volunteers were laying sweep stakes on whether the fish would arrive at all and if so when!! Then amazingly when I had all but given up hope the babies arrived in their oxygen-enriched bags ready for release into our floating nursery. After acclimatising the young roe to the cooler temperature of the creek by floating them in their bags we then transferred them to the nursery. Now we must monitor growth rates and costs of food to conclude whether the project would be economically viable for the locals as yet another alternative source of income. Should the project prove successful then we will help slow down the over-fishing of the rivers that currently takes place and also provide the locals with a means of making money that does not involve illegal extraction from the surrounding forest.

Elsewhere at the pilot farm the flowers are continuing to flourish and we had good harvest last month from Percy’s farm also. The coffee beans are ripe and ready for harvest and the guinea pigs are continuing to reproduce as our base population becomes ever larger. The donkeys are doing well and the young Ronaldinho (named for its ability to kick in any direction!) is growing quickly into a strong juvenile. March will see us out on the trails clearing and remarking after the heavy storms of the wet season. The new mammal enclosure will be finished and work will continue on the existing projects. New accommodation in the form of more bungalows is also planned for March so Taricaya is continuing to expand and the hard work of everyone involved with the project continues to bear fruit as we continue to pioneer conservation work in Peruvian Amazon.

You are just home from the hospital with your precious baby.  Reality is now setting in, where to begin?  You know you are going to be the best parent ever, no question there.  Then you realize there are so many other things to consider.  Besides loving your baby with beyond any emotion you have ever experienced you need to keep your baby well fed, warm and clean.

The first bath can be intimidating for all parents, experienced or otherwise.  Here's how to bathe baby and what you'll need to make baby-bathing easy. With any luck, his bath will become one of the most enjoyable parts of your days together:

1.Assemble all necessary bath accessories close to the bathing area and in easy reach.

2. Fill the tub with 2 to 3 inches of water that feels warm but not hot, about 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).  You can dip your elbow in and if the water feels luke warm that is about right.

3. Make sure the bathing area is warm and free of drafts.  Bring your baby to the bath area and undress him completely.

4. Gradually slip your baby into the tub, using one hand to support his neck and head. Pour cupfuls of bath water over him regularly during the bath so he doesn't get too cold.  Some parents find the Spa Baby Tub a great way to bathe baby as the baby is never really without water and stays snug and warm throughout the bath time.

5. Use soap sparingly (it dries your baby's skin) as you wash him with your hand or a washcloth from top to bottom, front to back. Gently wash his scalp with a wet, soapy cloth. Use a moistened cotton ball to clean his eyes and face. As for your baby’s genitals, a routine washing is all that is needed. If dried mucus has collected in the corner of your baby's nostrils or eyes, dab it several times with a small section of a moistened washcloth to soften it before you wipe it out.

6. Rinse your baby thoroughly with a clean washcloth.

7. Wrap your baby in a hooded towel and pat him dry.  The Kangaroo Towel is a product that is highly recommended.  You wear this hooded towel while bathing baby, then when you are ready to take the baby out of the tub, just slip him into the towels pouch.  Baby never gets cold and you can cuddle and make baby feel secure immediately.

8.  If his skin is dry, or if he has a bit of a diaper rash, you may want to apply a mild lotion after his bath.

Although some parents bathe their babies every day, until yours is crawling around and getting into messes, a bath isn't really necessary more than once or twice a week. (Just wash his face frequently and thoroughly clean his genital area after each diaper change.)
